Clerk's unintended slight leads to humorous verse

Poet abuse can take subtle forms. Especially elder poet abuse. Poets of a certain age can be sensitive. We have feelings, too, you know.

So it was as I stood in line recently at a supermarket checkout station. Observing the scene, I noticed that the clerk was reciting a mantra as each customer passed through.

Widows, widowers meet weekly

The Mid-Peninsula Widows and Widowers Association meets 7:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays at Los Altos Lutheran Church, 460 S. El Monte.

Formed in 1976 to provide support for those who have experienced the loss of a spouse, the group offers emotional support, fellowship and social activities. Meetings include discussion of upcoming events, refreshments and entertainment or a talk. Members range in age from 50s to 90s.

Medicare enrollment runs through Dec. 7

Medicare Open Enrollment is scheduled through Dec. 7.

Seniors can sign up for a Medicare Advantage health plan or Part D prescription drug plan, or switch from one plan to another. The new coverage will take effect Jan. 1.

Survivor shares Japanese internment experience

The creative writing assignment was two-fold: Personalize a story the teacher had read to the class about a bank robbery and then write something about herself that might be of interest to others. For the latter, Jeanette S. Arakawa wrote about her time in Rohwer internment camp in Arkansas.
