Charles Chuck Edward Utley

OBIT CHARLES CHUCK EDWARD UTLEY onlineCharles "Chuck" Edward Utley, 91, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2018 in Los Altos, CA. Born September 1, 1926, Chuck was the son of Charles Bach Utley and Kate (Phelps) Utley. As an only child, he grew up in Buffalo, NY until enlisting in the U.S. Navy during WWII and serving as a signalman on landing crafts in the South Pacific. He graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, MA in 1949. Chuck began a marketing career, which for the next 20 years would lead him west to Northern California, where a small advertising and public relations firm, Robert Ebey offered him a principal partnership in 1970. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Ebey, Utley & Company grew and prospered by helping many of the area's prominent commercial, financial and technology companies.

Jean Newton: Beloved PR specialist lent her expertise to good causes


Longtime Los Altos resident Jean Newton Fraguglia, a well-liked and respected local public relations entrepreneur who helped launch the trailblazing Rotary AIDS Project, died Sept. 5 at her home. She was 67.

Born Jan. 13, 1951, Mrs. Newton Fraguglia was raised in Sioux Falls, S.D., the daughter of Margaret and Norman Hanna and older sister to John Hanna.

She attended Lincoln Senior High School and the University of South Dakota and earned a degree in English from San Jose State University.

A devoted mother to sons Ryan and Chad, Mrs. Newton Fraguglia was considered a second mom to many, and her warm and inviting personality endeared her to friends, neighbors and even casual passersby wherever she went.

Dr. Arthur Winter Halliday

His passing was swift and unexpected, without pain and suffering, for which we are very grateful. Arthur was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, the youngest of three sons born to Amy Altana Brandenburg and Glen Halliday. Arthur attended the University of Kansas for his training in engineering physics. He graduated in 1952 and worked at the Hanford Plant in Richland, Washington until 1953. He changed his life plan realizing that studying medicine was his genuine passion. He attended the University of Kansas Medical School, while there, he met his first wife Marilyn Button. After graduating in 1958, Arthur did his Residency at University of San Francisco. Then, he and his 2 brothers, Gordon and Roger and their families settled in Los Altos.

John P. Withers, Jr.

OBIT John Withers onlineJohn P Withers, Jr. of Los Altos Hills passed away on August 20, 2018, and is finally reunited with his wife, Sandy, whom he adored. He valiantly fought a debilitating lung disease for years, refusing to be bedridden, and painstakingly planned for his family's future right up until the very end. His unbending will and razor-sharp mind were intact, softened only by his big heart and his love for his children and grandchildren who surrounded him on his last day. He was born on Christmas Day, 1942 to John and Clara Margaret (nee Grantham) in Washington, D.C, and grew up in Greensboro, NC. He attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia for high school and went on to Princeton University and then Stanford Graduate School of Business. He settled in Los Altos Hills, CA with his wife, Dorothy "Sandy" Dent, and together they raised three children and built a marriage that was admired by all. The first half of his career was spent in sales at Inmac Corporation and the second half was as a restaurateur and the owner of Kirk's Steakburgers, his favorite restaurant from business school. His final years were spent devoted to his wife's battle with cancer and then confronting his own disease, while trying to extract the most out of life.
