Kishiko Otaki of Sapporo, Japan, recently visited Dave and Dee Gustavson’s Los Altos home. Otaki was one of 15 Japanese travelers who stayed with local hosts for a week through the San Francisco Bay Area Friendship Force.

During the visit, Otaki and the Gustavsons were dinner guests of Los Altos neighbors Mary and Cal Morris. Other activities included four mornings of English classes, a welcome party at a Milpitas restaurant, pumpkin decorating, a Cultural Day with the Japanese guests entertaining their hosts with songs in Japanese and a dance featuring a 56-bamboo-stick mat to make various shapes in rhythm while singing. The Japanese group and their hosts gathered at Prusch Farm Park for the dedication of a fruitless mulberry tree, planted in the Friendship Force’s Friendship Forest in honor of the Sapporo club.
