Local gymnastics teams spring into action

Los Altos High’s Roosa Uusitalo competes in Thursday night’s meet at Twisters.

Although coach Sarah Wallace had yet to receive the official results from her teams’ opening meet of the season, she saw enough to know that Los Altos and Mountain View highs excelled Thursday night at Twisters in Sunnyvale.

The coach said Friday that the Eagles “had a great first competition” and the Spartans “did extremely well” against Cupertino, Homestead and host St. Francis.

Sports on the Side

Spartans’ celebration set for April 26

The Mountain View High girls soccer team has been selected as an honoree for the sixth annual MaxPreps Girls Soccer Tour of Champions. The Spartans, who won the Central Coast Section Open Division title last month, will be recognized as one of the top 10 teams in the country during a ceremony scheduled 12:45 p.m. April 26 in the school quad. The team will receive a National Guard National Ranking Trophy from MaxPreps and Army National Guard representatives.

Pathways Run/Walk approaches

The 16th annual Pathways Run/Walk is slated 9 a.m. May 13 at Westwind Community Barn, 27210 Altamont Road, Los Altos Hills. Featuring a hilly 5K and 10K run/walk and a 1-mile run, the course includes Byrne Preserve and part of the town’s pathways system. The 5K/10K is set for 9 a.m. and the mile at 10:30 a.m. Registration for the 5K/10K is $50 ($55 on race day) and $40 for groups (10 or more); registration for the mile run is $35 ($40 on race day). Not long ago, Shirley Pefley visited our offices for what proved to be the last time. She looked amazingly well, except that her eyes were welling with tears.

Eagles fall to 4th place

Ryan Buchner notched Los Altos’ lone hit in Friday’s loss.

A pitchers’ duel between Los Altos High ace Alex Reelfs and Los Gatos’ undefeated Ryan Wilcox came down to the last two innings of Friday’s baseball game. Tied at 1 after the fifth, the Wildcats pulled ahead in the sixth on the way to a 5-2 win over the host Eagles.

“I think the result stinks,” said Los Altos head coach Gabriel Stewart, whose team lost both games against Los Gatos last week and dropped into fourth place in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division at 4-4. “It was a good baseball game. We just ended up on the wrong end of it.”
