Parry powers Mtn. View girls to soccer win over St. Francis

After her performance in the final of the Fremont Firebird Classic – and throughout the girls soccer tournament – it’s no surprise Bethan Parry was named tourney MVP. The senior scored two goals in Mountain View High’s 3-0 win over St. Francis Dec. 16.

Parry notched a goal and/or an assist in each of the Spartans’ four wins over the two-week event.

Twin sisters Annika, left, and Kristina Penickova hold the trophies they won in October at the Manteca Open. Annika placed second in the under-12 girls singles division and Kristina came in third.

Some twins might claim to share telepathy, though it’s difficult to prove that a bond that strong exists. Tennis-playing twins Annika and Kristina Penickova don’t claim to have the ability to read each other’s minds, but they certainly understand one another on the court.

Annika, a righty, and Kristina, a lefty, are not only sisters, but also teammates. They often play as a doubles team and said being twins – and having different dominant arms – works to their advantage by letting them cover the court more efficiently.

St. Francis High’s Logan Johnson fires up a 3 to beat the shot-clock buzzer in the NorCal Division II final.

With so many local high school teams and individual athletes excelling on every level – league, section, region and even state – it was tough to whittle down the list of the Town Crier’s top sports stories of the year to only 10.

So, with apologies to those who missed the cut, here’s the countdown.
