Locals chip in to support Youth on Course program

Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club recently hosted the first private club fundraising event to benefit Youth on Course, a golf program supported by Los Altos and Los Altos Hills residents.

Started by the Northern California Golf Association in 2005, YOC provides students ages 6-18 with access to potentially life-changing opportunities through golf, beginning with access to affordable golf (less than $5 at more than 330 participating courses) and continuing beyond the green with employment opportunities, paid high school internships and college scholarships.

Three St. Francis grads on SCU soccer squad

The Santa Clara University women’s soccer team, which features three St. Francis High graduates, is picked to place second in the West Coast Conference by the league’s coaches. Former Lancers on the squad include freshman goalie Courtney Ogren, freshman midfielder DB Pridham and junior midfielder Megan Keeth, a Los Altos native.

Play with the pros at EPATT Kids Cup

The third annual East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring (EPATT) Kids Cup is scheduled 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 24 at Stanford University. Team and individual spots are available to play with former pros Brad Gilbert, Justin Gimelstob, Jeff Tarango, Tim Mayotte and more. The event includes two divisions of six amateur players, one Stanford varsity player and one tennis pro competing in a round-robin doubles tournament. Proceeds from the tourney, and the Sept. 23 kickoff party at Alpine Hills Tennis Club, will help fund EPATT’s expansion of its free afterschool program. Smith promoted to head coach of SF baseball team

St. Francis High officials recently elevated Mike Smith to head baseball coach.

Smith – a varsity assistant the past eight years – replaces Mike Oakland, who will coach the softball team in the spring.

Fencer makes his point at nationals Stanford-bound fencer Kwong claims three medals in Dallas

Samuel Kwong faces off against an opponent. The Los Altos Hills resident has been fencing for 10 years as a member of Cardinal Fencing Club and will attend Stanford this fall.

When Samuel Kwong was young, he enjoyed watching movies with sword-fighting scenes.
