St. Francis High sophomore Maurice Wilmer shoots a floater in Saturday’s game. He finished with eight points.

Midway through the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Northern California Division II final, the St. Francis High boys basketball team seemed well on its way to Sacramento for this weekend’s state championships. Jacob Mihanovic had just cut to the basket for a layin, pushing the Lancers’ lead to 69-60.

Then everything went sideways for top-seeded St. Francis.

St. Francis girls eliminated by top-seeded team in NorCal semis

The St. Francis High girls basketball team proved no match for top-seeded Vanden last week in the semifinals of the Northern California Division II playoffs.

The fourth-seeded Lancers fell 77-42 to host Vanden of Fairfield March 14.

Foothill women fall in quarterfinals of state tourney

The Foothill College women’s basketball team got off to a fast start but couldn’t sustain it against Mt. San Antonio, the top seed from the south, which rallied for a 58-46 win in the quarterfinals of the state tournament March 10 in Livermore.

The Owls’ early six-point lead quickly evaporated, with the Mounties taking a 34-18 lead into halftime. Foothill, the fourth seed from the north, fell behind by 20 before cutting that deficit in half late in the game but got no closer.
