Covington fair celebrates diverse cultures

Jane Ridgeway/Town Crier
The Covington School choir colorfully costumed for its Multicultural Fair, treats listeners to an arrangement of a Justin Timberlake tune at the May 5 event.

Covington School students and their families snacked on samosas, collected stamps in specially made passports, learned about other cultures and watched a colorful array of musical and dance performances May 5 at the school’s bustling Multicultural Fair.

Flags fluttered above parent-manned booths representing countries from Indonesia to Moldova, and bright, multisensory displays helped students learn about other parts of the world.

While hockey sticks clattered in front of the Canadian booth and children examined a matryoshka doll at the Russian display, others discovered traditional folk costumes and musical instruments. Parents representing the United States did a swift business serving up whorls of cotton candy. The canned haggis proudly displayed as a decoration at the Scottish booth, however, did not seem to find any takers.

Performances included a Philippine Tinikling dance by the Mountain View Spartan Dance Club, a bagpipe player, Irish and Indian dancing, a tae kwon do demonstration and a choral performance by the Covington choir.
